A Food Bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to a group of agencies. Once the agencies receive the food, they turn around and feed the hungry by providing a Food Pantry to their local residents.
The food from food banks and food pantries come from many sources. One of the largest sources is excess foods from growers, manufacturers, retailers and distributors.
If you are an individual or family who is in need of emergency food assistance what you are looking for is a food pantry, not an actual food bank. The reason I choose to call this section "Food Banks" is because studies show that people are more familiar with the term.
If you follow the links below, you will find a wealth of information about food pantries in your local area. If I have missed one that you know of, please do not hesitate to put it in the comments and I will add it immediately.
